While a little over 45 years might seem slow change to many, for historians of social attitudes a transformation of this magnitude is rapid — although it might also be a factor indicating how far out of step with those attitudes the FA of was. It is hard not to conclude that the target audience is those already in the Manchester City world — there is an overarching narrative frame, but it is only made explicit in that methodological afterword.
While I understand the reason for presenting it there rather than in the body of the text at the risk of alienating a wider reading audience, the text could have benefitted from being structured around the five stages of development. Doing so might have provided those of us outside the Manchester City world with a clearer sense of how and why various aspects are drawn out at the stage they are.
There are powerful moments of institutional insensitivity alluded to, spoken round and on a few occasions drawn out explicitly that point to the considerable emotional investments many have in their sports teams, amateur and professional. The origins of the team lie very much in the actions of a group of women who just wanted to play football and the support they were able to garner from key individuals in Man City Football in the Community scheme.
It is clear that most of the interviewees forcefully reject that outlook. Much as I would have liked to have seen James provide a little more framing and therefore structure to the narrative, there is a powerful sense of the stories not only of leaders and high profile figures, but also of many of those grafters whose voluntary work is the vital life force of community sports participation.
For much of the time covered here this was very much a community club that happened to be affiliated with and to receive some support from a major professional team. For the earlier era, before the re-launch, however, this is a richly presented insight into the challenges of building a club from next to nothing and maintaining a nationally competitive team in a voluntary, community-based club. Feb 10, Jaz rated it it was amazing. A timely book, co-inciding with a welcome effort by Manchester City FC to document the history of their women's team; established - not in as some mis-informed individuals like to believe - just over thirty years ago.
Gary James has managed to find many of the players and staff of the original club and allowed them to tell the story in their own words.
